Miss Lizzy checking in here from the heart of TCOTS central with some odds and ends for my rocking friends here!

First, for those of you in the New York area, come celebrate the 1st Anniversary of "Rock of Ages" on Broadway with a party at the famous Carnival at Bowlmor Lanes. Here are the details...

The cast of the Tony-nominated musical Rock of Ages will celebrate its first anniversary on Broadway with a May 12 evening at Carnival at Bowlmor Lanes in Manhattan.

Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis, Derek St. Pierre, Michele Mais, Michael Minarik, Angel Reed, Matt Stocke, Jenifer Foote, Katherine Tokarz, Jeremy Woodard, Becca Tobin, Winston Roye, Mitchell Jarvis and Tommy Kessler are all scheduled to be part of the 6-9 PM event, which is open to the public.

Guests will enjoy music, boardwalk games, live circus performers, up-scale carnival-themed food and drinks and an opportunity to rock out with the cast. Admission to the celebration is $25 per ticket (purchased at the door) and includes ten game tickets and live circus entertainment.

Next, former ROA cast member and current star of "The Addams Family", Wesley Taylor, made his headlining solo debut at Joe's Pub this past Monday and Friend of TCOTS "Liz" was able to capture it on video and was gracious enough to share with us, so take a peek!

Rock of Ages Hits The Road - With It's Broadway Star, Constantine!

Hey, rockers!

The news just broke a few hours ago...

Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis will reprise his performance in the national tour of the 1980s-set rock musical Rock of Ages, which will launch Sept. 21 in Chicago.

Maroulis earned a 2009 Best Actor Tony Award nomination for portraying Drew, an aspiring musician with pipes of steel in the Tony-nominated musical. He originated the role in the Off-Broadway production at New World Stages in 2008.

Lead producers Matthew Weaver and Carl Levin stated, "[Constantine] is the heart and soul of our show, and we're thrilled that all of America will get to see his incredible performance."

Maroulis has also appeared on Broadway in The Wedding Singer, Off-Broadway in Jacques Brel… and the national tour of Rent. He is best known as a finalist on the 2005 season of "American Idol." A new solo CD is forthcoming.

Our newest TCOTS staff member, Anne Barnett, took the Rock of Ages Toronto bus trip from April 18-20 and wanted to share her adventures here with all of you kickass folks!

Rock of Ages Bus - Toronto

This is the true story... of 14 strangers... picked to ride on KICK ASS BUS...See Rock of Ages together and have their lives taped... to find out what happens... when people stop being dull... and start getting ROCKED...The Rock of Ages BUS - Toronto.

Day ONE
The 14 chosen ones met at the BAT around 830 am. I was running late, nothing going right, phone got stolen, but made it in time. We actually took off late. The amazing bus furnished by Mirvish arrived shortly after. We were all in awe! We got to experience being true rock stars riding on our tour bus to our next big show. Smooth sailing out of NYC. We went through the Lincoln Tunnel, NJ, PA an up through NY State.

At the BAT, Mark Seeley approached me with a package that had my name on it. Tristan of Mirvish had sent me a camcorder to video tape the whole trip. We had a blast acting out scenes and singing along to the cast album. Right at the good part of “Don't Stop Believin'” the battery died. There was no power cord or charger in the box. I had a mini DV Cam and Wanda had a flip so we took tons of pics and what video we could, with what we had. I was honored they came to me about being the videographer.

On the way up we passed an Arby's, but no one was prepared so we didn't get our cameras out on time. We were all on alert for the next one. Sure enough, further along on the trip, “ARBY'S!!” I shouted, and the bus driver, Howard, pulled off the exit immediately, which made us believe he was eavesdropping on everything we were talking about.

The Toronto skyline looks very gothem-esque, grey and industrial. We arrived in Toronto at the Sheraton. The 10 hour bus ride seemed so short because we just laughed, sang and told stories the entire time. By the time we arrived we realized we were going to have a lifelong bond that no one can break.

They canceled my reservation, and then tried to upgrade us without telling us, but everything got straightened out. Our room had an amazing view of the CN tower, the second tallest completed freestanding structure on land. We also could look down and see a running track on the roof of a building and people swimming in a pool; it wasn't warm. We walked around town, which was beautiful at night; very clean streets and fresh air. We ate at East-Side Mario's, went into the lobby of the CN Tower (Amanda & Cheryl went up), and found our beloved Royal Alexandria Theatre.
The RAT (not to be confused with the BAT) was all lit up and sparkly in anticipation of her big event the next night. Even though it was dark, we snapped pictures, danced, sang and Daryl & Gavin demonstrated Dennis and Lonny's infamous lift from “Can't stop this feeling”. It was the end to an amazing day one!

Day TWO
In the morning, everyone kind of teamed up and went separate ways. It was hard to organize the full team due to no one wanted to use cells because of high rates, etc. Wanda and Gavin went to Casa Loma, Jenn, Daryl & Sarah went to the CN Tower for a day view and Christina & Michele checked out the shops and University of Toronto Campus. I hooked up with Cheryl & Amanda and we went window shopping, got drunk at the Steam Whistle Brewery and walked down the very Melrose-esque Queen Street. We came across a store on Queen Street called Bang On, walked in, and low and behold a mannequin with a t-shirt on that says “Beaver Hunter”! I’m serious! Totally random! Well, of course I just had to buy it for our favorite Primo (Jeremy Woodard) back in NYC. Most of us enjoyed meals throughout the day, at the food court in our fabulous Sheraton.

Back at the hotel we all got ready for the final invited dress rehearsal of ROA Toronto. Everyone looked amazing! Our chariot awaits. We go down to meet Howard, our amazing bus driver/tour guide and he greets us with his normal, sincere, “Hi guys”!

We arrived at the RAT (Royal Alexandria Theatre) like true “Rockstars” with cameras rolling and flashes going off. We broke into an amazing version of “Don’t Stop Believin’. The crowd acted like they had never seen such a spectacle.

We “stepped off the bus out into the city streets”, and were given our tickets and invites to the after party. To everyone’s surprise Mirvish really did hook us up (as Lonny stated), front row baby! Before, during and after the show we got interviewed by CityTV & Mirvish. It was a surreal, unexplainable experience.

Inside we found our amazing front row seats. Managed to get a couple quick pics & video of the stage b4 we were told to put the cameras away. Yeah, I know better, but the stage was too fabulous for words! It was pretty much the same with a few exceptions.

Stage right they had the pay phone, but it wasn’t on the same wall as NYC. Sherrie swung and fell off stage instead of swinging into the phone. In the back of the stage they had the screen which they showed way more videos and pics then the NYC production. David Coverdale was animated; hysterical. The stuff for obstructed/far view seats was shown on the screen as well. Under the screen was a balcony. Lonnie played his sax on the balcony. That was my favorite part of the stage. Under the balcony was the Arsenal stage and the drummer was behind a glass wall instead of a cage. Stage left was pretty much the same. The RAT stage was huge and less intimate the BAT stage and the theatre was longer from the back of the house to the stage.
Funniest moment, for me, was probably when Sherrie came out pregnant. Elicia’s baby bump was twice as big as Emily’s from the NYC production. And she was stuffed with “Primo money”, which started falling out from the bottom of her shirt during “Don’t Stop Believin’”. I joked that Primo got her pregnant instead of Drew, since he “shits money”. It was an ongoing joke the rest of the trip. I guess you can say her water broke. It was hysterical! They kept in character very well. I would have lost it.

Another great moment is when we were expecting Stacee to drunk stumble down the left aisle during ”Every Rose” and he didn’t come. When we all looked back so did the audience; bunch of followers. Stacee eventually turned up on the stairs, not sure where he came from. It was a long aisle to come down.

They added a few Canadian touches such as the Molson Canadian sign on the stage left wall. Yvan (Drew) added, “by way of Montreal” after Sherrie said, “Michigan”, during “Don’t Stop Believin’”. The video montage during “Can’t fight this feeling were Canadian images and they were at a Maple Leafs game at the end. The part where they are hanging with Sammy, CC & Deborah, changed to Sammy Hagar, CC DeVille, Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, and Gordon Lightfoot (Dennis: "You listen to Gordon Lightfoot?" Lonnie: "Sometimes."). And of course the renovation on another North American City became Toronto.

After the show we were invited to the after-show party. The whole cast and crew were there, and an open bar. We were told to be back on the bus at 1130, but were having too much fun to leave. Needless to say Howard left without some of us. But our hotel was within walking distance, so no worries. We were all concerned we wouldn’t recognize anyone in the cast without the makeup but with some assistance was able to meet almost everyone; we missed out on some of the understudies. During the show Drew hits Lonnie with a programme. No one in the audience received a programme. We asked Carl if we could have them and he left and came back with 14 of them. We were the only 14 people to get the programme at the final invited dress of ROA-Toronto.

After the show we walked back to our hotel and hung out in Daryl’s room for a couple hours. It was hard to go to sleep because no one wanted it to end.

Day THREE
We were hoping this day would not come. So sad that this most amazing trip of our lives was over. We got up around 7 and met for breakfast in the food court at 8. We thought we were supposed to meet the bus at 9, but were mistaken, it was actually 10. We joked that Howard probably left us again.

After loading up, we headed home. On the way home we actually pass right by Niagara falls, so we asked Howard if he could stop and he agreed. If you’ve never been there, it’s not something you can’t put into words. The whole experience of Niagara Falls was very surreal to me. I actually got very emotional. Oh and before we arrived at the falls, Howard pointed out the smallest church in the world as we passed by in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario. It was so cute. And they actually have weddings there.

After a slight delay at the border crossing we were back in the US with memories that will last our lifetimes. Side note… when entering Canada, at the border crossing, you best know your bridges (inside joke).

The 10 hours home was a little less exciting. Most of us slept. It was an exhausting 3 days.
Finally familiar sights! As we were driving down RT 3, past the Meadowlands, with the Empire State Building in sight we noticed it was almost 930pm. We were excited at the possibility of our beloved NYC cast being able to see us and the bus as we arrived. Well, they had technical issues that caused an hour and fifteen minute intermission, so they missed our arrival. I was happy to hear they decided to finish the show. That’s why we love them. Some of us waited till the show finally ended. Most of the NYC cast came out to welcome us back and we got a couple group shots, my favorite being the one of us with Lauren, Derek and Mitch. They said they missed us and were happy to have us back.

We were happy to be back. It was the end to a perfect trip.

So that’s how our story wraps up, but in the case of the 14 strangers turned friends, the dreams we came in with were the dreams we left with and they ROCK!

Hey Rockers!

While the ACTUAL date of the 1st birthday of Broadway's "Rock of Ages" is today (Wednesday, April 7), the show is dark, so a bash was thrown last night at Tony's di Napoli for the cast, crew, producers and Brooks Atkinson staff to celebrate the anniversary with lots of good food, speeches, music, and a gorgeous cake. However the highlight was a video created by the producers, featuring the fans of the show (including a few famous ones!) talking about how the show touched their lives.

In addition, the show's star, Constantine Maroulis was added to Tony di Napoli's Wall of fame with a portrait unveiling, hosted by restaurant manager Bruce Dipflmaier and Wall of Fame producer Valerie Smaldone. Rock Of Ages The Musical goes Country; Set to Open in Branson, MO

Smash hit Rock Of Ages The Musical has been enjoying constant sell out performances since its opening on Broadway a year ago, but after a successful year entertaining New Yorkers and tourists with its 80s rock nostalgia and monster rock ballads, the producers feel its time to reinterpret the production to reach their originally intended audience--country music.

Matt Weaver, Producer of Rock Of Ages, recalls in a recent interview in Country Weekly Magazine, "When we first came up with the idea for this production, of course it was supposed to be All Country Music, but along the way we were cooerced into changing it to a musical about LA in the late 80s, instead of Nashville in the 60s as the first script indicated."

Writer Chris D'Arienzo (sporting a 10 gallon stetson hat and titanium spurs) added "I love country music, I grew up watching "Hee Haw" and listening to Eddie Rabbit, Tammy Wynette and the Oak Ridge Boys and my biggest dream was to pen a romantic musical comedy set in a bluegrass bar in Nashville, where a young girl from LA comes to fall in love with a small town busboy. I was floored when they changed the concept. That whole rock thing is completely foreign to me, I had to read reams of issues of Kerrang Magazine and watch MTV reruns to even get a basic understanding of what rock was like in the 80s, and even still I just don't see the appeal, but at least some of the fans seem to like it."

But will the lead rocker, Constantine Maroulis, move to Missouri to join the cast there? Producer Janet Billig commented "Well, uh, we havent actually asked him yet, since we're waiting for Keith Urban to get back to us. Besides, Constantine may be "too ethnic."

First up...a concert from current cast member Lauren Molina at the Duplex in the West Village on Wednesday, April 14th at 9:30pm. Here's the show in her own words...

I'm making a comeback to the trusty old Duplex. It's cozy, fun, and I guarantee a singalong. Please come and have a few laughs with me and my music making friends.

It will be an evening of ukulele driven originals, and playful covers, layered with cello, guitar, banjo, and melodica.
I will be playing with Christian Imboden on guitar, and special guests Nick Cearley and Michele Mais, aka Maisey, from Rock of Ages

As soon as we get theatre information for the Broadway run, I will let you know. Stay connected and spread the word. "

Song you most looking forward to performing in the show: Oooooh, I really enjoy the "More than Words/Heaven" medley. I think the arrangement is beautiful.

In “Rock of Ages,” Drew’s a barback, Lonny’s a sound engineer and Sherrie’s a waitress. If you weren’t about to be in a hit musical on Broadway, what would you be doing for a living? I honestly I have no idea. At this point, performing is my only option.

Favorite 80's movie / TV show: "The Never Ending Story" is not only my favorite 80's movie, but my favorite movie of ALL time. "ARTEX!! YOU'RE SINKING!!!" My favorite TV show of the 80's? Probably "Gimme a Break" cause Nell Carter was way a head of her time.

If you could go back in time to see any band in concert with a song in "Rock of Ages", who would it be? Definitely Journey. Steve Perry was an AMAZING front man and I still haven't gotten over the fact that he left the band. WHHHHHHHHHY???

On a gorgeous, sunny, cool and breezy March afternoon in New York City, at the legendary Sardi's Restaurant, "Rock of Ages" star Constantine Maroulis was honored with a caricature portrait to hang in the restaurant's gallery of Broadway luminaries.

Along with current and past members of the "Rock of Ages" cast, family, and friends, veteran rocker (and Sopranos star) Steven Van Zandt also attended the event.

Rock of Ages Star Constantine Maroulis to be Immortalized At Sardi's

Happy Monday, Rockers!

MAJOR news...

"American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis, who earned a 2009 Tony Award nomination for his performance in Rock of Ages, will be honored with a Sardi's caricature March 18.

The unveiling of the caricature will be held at 5 PM at the famed Manhattan eatery. The event is by-invitation-only.

A Brooklyn native, Constantine Maroulis is a graduate of both the Boston Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music. He trained as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and appeared as Roger in a tour of Rent. In addition to his performances on "American Idol," he has also been seen on "Law & Order: SVU" and in several independent films. Maroulis played a previous engagement at the Public Theater's Joe's Pub as well as a stint in Broadway's The Wedding Singer and Off-Broadway's Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. He was also seen in the Premier Theatre Company's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Rock of Ages Welcomes New Cast Members in March

Hey, Rockers!

"Just like every night has its dawn..."

...every role must be recast when beloved cast members leave...so here are is the official announcement on replacements this month for Kerry Butler (Sherrie) and Tom Lenk (Franz).

Emily Padgett will succeed Tony nominee Kerry Butler as Sherrie in the Broadway production of Rock of Ages March 15.Padgett (Grease, Legally Blonde), who has understudied the role since November, will take over for Butler, who departs March 13. Butler began performances in Rock of Ages Sept. 18.

Actor Tom Lenk, who succeeded current Addams Family actor Wesley Taylor in the role of Franz, will play his final performance in Rock of Ages March 21.

On March 22, the Broadway production will welcome Derek St. Pierre in his Broadway debut as Franz and Katie Webber (Memphis) as Waitress #1.

We'll miss you, Kerry and Tom (look for a cabaret show from Kerry in the near future)...and congratulations to Emily on the "promotion" and welcome to Katie and Derek!

Got lots of news items to cover today...catching you all up on some of the latest from the the Bourbon Room...

First, and most importantly...the cast of "Rock of Ages" have kicked off a fundraising campaign to assist the relief / rescue efforts in the aftermath of the tragedy in Haiti. Backstage tours are being offered for a donation of $100 for one person, $50 for each additional person (up to 4 total in a group), with one tour per performance. Please contact cast member Lauren Molina via her Facebook page or email me at lizzy@thecryofthestrip.com and I will forward your requests along to Lauren.

Next...it is hard to believe that "Rock of Ages" has been open on Broadway for almost ten months...New York Times reviewer Charles Isherwood revisits the Brooks Atkinson and gives yet another glowing review of the show. Read it here.

"Lungs of steel" (and star of ROA) Constantine Maroulis headlines the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan this Wednesday, January 20th. Opening for him will be his castmate Tom Lenk! Tickets for the show can be purchased online or at the Highline box office.

Toronto ROA Tickets on Sale!!!!

Rock on, eh? The Canadian premiere of Broadway's 1980s-set musical Rock of Ages goes on sale 12:30 PM Nov. 27 with a special offer at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre. At that time, the first 200 tickets to the first performance will be sold for $19.87 each.Performances begin April 20, 2010, at the Royal Alex at 260 King St West). Regular ticket sales begin 9 AM Nov. 28.

Theatregoers coming to the $19.87 tickets are encouraged to raid their closets for their old '80s garb — jelly shoes, acid-wash jeans, leg-warmers and Izod shirts — and wear it to the box office event on Friday.

The musical that robs the trunk of '80s rock writers is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.

Rock of Ages Cast Members Staying on the Sunset Strip Through 2010!

Wanted you guys to be some of the first to hear that it is official - several members of the "Rock of Ages" cast are joining star Constantine Maroulis (Drew) in staying with the Broadway production through the summer of 2010.

Joining Constantine through summer 2010 are James Carpinello (Stacee Jaxx), Adam Dannheisser (Dennis), Mitchell Jarvis (Lonny), Michele Mais (Justice), and Lauren Molina (Regina). Paul Schoeffler, currently on leave, returns Monday, October 26 and will also be with the show through summer 2010. Don Stephenson is playing the role of “Hertz” until Mr. Schoeffler returns. As previously announced, Kerry Butler will join the cast for six months as “Sherrie” on Monday, September 21, 2009.

Current cast members Savannah Wise (Sherrie) and Wesley Taylor (Franz) will be leaving "Rock of Ages" after the 7pm performance on Sunday, September 13th. Savannah is joining the cast of the "Ragtime" revival on Broadway (opening later this fall) while Wesley is headed to Chicago for the pre-Broadway run of "The Addams Family" (expected to open on Broadway next April).

The “Sherrie” understudy will play the role during both performances on Sundays. Constantine Maroulis continues his Tony Award Nominated performance staring in the show as “Drew”.

Kerry Butler most recently starred on Broadway, and received Tony Award and Drama League Award nominations for her critically acclaimed role as ‘Kira” in Xanadu. A versatile musical theatre comedienne, Ms. Butler has made an indelible mark on Broadway playing such characters as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors (Outer Critics Circle Award nom.), the original “Penny” in Hairspray (Clarence Derwent Award; Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle noms.), “Belle” in Beauty and the Beast (Belle), “Eponine” in Les Misérables and “Ms. Jones” in Blood Brothers. 1. The Rock of Ages Cruise on Wednesday, August 26^th! Per the official Rock of Ages page on Facebook, here are the details: The Circle Line Cruise will set sail at 7:00pm and return at 9:30pm. Boarding begins at 6:30pm. VJ Randy Esulto will be mixing your favorite 80s music videos and DJ Twist will be spinning your favorite 80s hits! You can win tickets to ROCK OF AGES on Broadway & the ROCK OF AGES Original Broadway Cast Recording CD! Tickets are $40 per person and include boat ticket, beer (courtesy of Heartland Brewery) wine (courtesy of Casa De Vinos) and soda. A cash bar will also be available. Welcome to two new members of the ROA family…Don Stephenson and Eric Sciotto!

Don Stephenson will be portraying the scourge of the Sunset Strip, the destined demolisher of Dupree’s, “Hertz Kleinman” while Paul Schoeffler is temporarily relocating to the fictional town of Beaumont Sur Mer (via Philadelphia, PA), portraying the charming cad "Lawrence Jamieson" in the Walnut Street Theater production of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (a role made famous in film by Michael Caine and on Broadway by John Lithgow). Paul will be returning to Rock of Ages beginning October 26^th.

Eric Sciotto is the newest super-Swing in the ROA family and with lots of vacations and such over the summer and fall, I’m sure there will be lots of chances to enjoy his work! He hit the ground running last night (Monday, August 17) playing Joey Primo in what is now being referred to as the Epic Understudy Festival (6 understudies and 2 debuts in one performance)!

- From Hal Leonard Publishing, the Piano/Vocal Song Book for “Rock of Ages” has been released. If you are in the NYC area, Colony Music at Broadway and 49^th Street is the easiest place to pick it up. Outside of NYC, I’d recommend the Hal Leonard website.

I was told last night by one of the producers of "Rock of Ages" that the cast performance will be pre-taped for broadcast (most likely WITHOUT an audience) this coming Monday (the 27th) and will be broadcast on Friday, July 31st.

It is official!!! Direct from The Powers That Be...

Producers of the five-time Tony Award nominated hit musical, ROCK OF AGES announced today that Savannah Wise will officially take over the role of Sherrie, effective immediately. After having understudied the role since performances began on Broadway on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre (256 West 47th Street), Ms. Wise will star opposite Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis.

Her former theatre credits include Broadway/ Off-Broadway/Nat'l tour: Les Misérables, Rock of Ages off-Broadway, Disney's High School Musical. Regional: Happy Days (Joanie), Beauty and the Beast (Belle), Annie Get Your Gun (Winnie Tate). She has also appeared as a TV guest star on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "Rescue Me." It's official. Amy Spanger, after a few weeks resting her voice from the past few months of sold out face melting performances as leading lady Sherrie Christian, has announced she is leaving the show effective now. She cites "personal reasons" for bowing out, though we trust the decision will be positive for her and the time she spent with the cast will be a fond memory for her and all of us as well who enjoyed her work. She brought a high level of killer talent to the show - singing, dancing and especially comic acting - and was super sweet and adorable to boot.

Savannah Wise has been playing the role of Sherri in the interim and will continue, we understand, until the producers find a suitable replacement. While we enjoy Savannah quite a lot as "Waitress #1" her Sherrie is a fabulous upgrade and not to be missed! Go Sav!

I hope you guys don’t mind indulging your dramatic conjurer here at TCOTS for a moment…

When an actor who has originated a role in a hit show decides to leave, there’s always some sadness, as fans have taken that actor and the character he or she portrays to heart. The role and actor are indelibly joined as one in the show’s history. But when they leave for the purpose of getting to create yet another role in another new show, well, then you have to temper your sadness with pride, as you know that others are seeing in that actor the talent that the producers of your favorite show did.

As many theater news outlets reported earlier this month, a new musical based on “The Addams Family” will be making its world premiere in Chicago on November 12, 2009, with a Broadway opening in April of 2010. “Rock of Ages” own Wesley Taylor will be joining this cast as 'Lucas Beineke,' whose relationship with 'Wednesday Addams' (played by Krysta Rodriguez, most recently of "In The Heights") will be the focal point of the plot. Other Broadway luminaries in this cast include Nathan Lane as 'Gomez', Bebe Neuwirth as 'Morticia', and the duo of Terrence Mann and Carolee Carmello as Lucas’ parents.

Wesley’s last performance in “Rock of Ages” will be the 7pm show on Sunday, September 13th and tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the Brooks Atkinson box office.

Hey, Rockers!

Hope you all got a chance to see the cast of "Rock of Ages" tear it up on NBC's Today Show yesterday morning (they performed three numbers - "Don't Stop Believin'", "High Enough" and "Here I Go Again" - see the video in the previous blog item!) in front of an enthusiastic, rockin' crowd on Memorial Day.

The enthusiasm for the show was also expressed in artwork, through the many terrific entries in the "Rock of Ages - Today Show Poster Contest" and the powers-that-be have decided that along with a winner of two tickets to an upcoming performance of "Rock of Ages", there are two runners-up who will each win a kickass prize package from the ROA Merchandise Store.

Rock of Ages' Tad Wilson Kicks Off "Broadway Legs" for BC/EFA

“Rock of Ages” cast member Tad Wilson is spearheading what we hope will become a new theater tradition and would love for the fans to help!

Now, the theater community has had a time-honored phrase for wishing someone good luck –“Break a leg.” At a few of the recent Broadway openings, the casts of such shows as “Rock of Ages", “Next to Normal", "9 to 5" and "Waiting for Godot" have been presented with an artifical leg, signed by cast members and created for the occasion to ceremonially break before curtain.

“Broadway Legs” hopes to donate the signed legs to the silent auction at the Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS Grand Flea Market and Auction in late September, but – sorry about this joke, everyone – these legs cost an arm and a…well, you know.

Tad has acquired 10 “Rock of Ages” show posters signed by the entire Broadway cast and would like to give the fans here on The Cry of the Strip the first opportunity to purchase one for $50, with every penny going to purchase the materials for the project.

"Rock of Ages" star James Carpinello at Seth's Broadway Chatterbox TONIGHT 5/7!

Just got word that "Rock of Ages" star James Carpinello ("Stacee Jaxx") will be the guest at Seth Rudetsky's weekly talk show "Seth's Broadway Chatterbox" tonight, May 7th.

Per Playbill.com, James will be bringing "Rock of Ages" guitarist David Gibbs with him to the Chatterbox and will be debuting a song cut out of the show, written for Stacee and his fictional band Arsenal, entitled "I Want Your Cans."

The weekly live talk show, which includes interviews and performances from Broadway stars, is held at 6 PM at the New York cabaret Don't Tell Mama. There is a $10 donation and a two-drink minimum. The donation goes directly to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the nation's leading industry-based, not-for-profit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization.

"Rock of Ages" TV Appearances, Special Guests...and an Award or Two!

Hey, Rockers!

Lately, there have been some awesome TV appearances by the "Rock of Ages" cast, some megawatt stars of tv, film and rock and roll visiting the show...and a cast member has been recognized a recent appearance in another production (but just got the award). So kick off your heels and scrape off the makeup (you too, ladies!), get comfortable...and away we go!

First of all, your friends here at The Cry of the Strip want to make sure that just in case you're totally retro and haven't gotten one of those fancy TiVo things, you still get to catch two AWESOME appearances by the cast of "Rock of Ages" and some very special guests.

First, on Monday April 27th, "Rock of Ages" stars Constantine Maroulis and Amy Spanger joined legendary rockers Tommy Shaw of Styx and Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon at the CBS Early Show. Amy and Constantine were interviewed to promote "Rock of Ages."

Later, they joined Tommy and Kevin on the CBS Early Show stage as they performed their new single "Can't Stop Rockin" (also the name of the Styx/REO Speedwagon / 38 Special tour, which kicks off May 12th).

On Wednesday, April 29th, the cast and band of "Rock of Ages" made some rock and roll dreams come true as Regis Philbin donned some leather and studs, learned "metal hands" and got in touch with his inner rock star during Broadway Week on "Live with Regis and Kelly."

What's even more amazing - "Reege" isn't the only celebrity with the desire to hang out in the Bourbon Room! "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, 80's icon (Batman? Beetlejuice? MR. MOM!?!?!?!?) Michael Keaton, legendary rocker Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees and "Lost" star Matthew Fox have all stopped by "Rock of Ages" in the past week. Michael Twittered about the fun he had at the show, and both Neil and Matthew sang the shows praises on various talk shows...word is getting around!

Last, but certainly not least, we'd like to send a special "way to go" out to cast member Tad Wilson on his winning his first professional theater award this past week. Tad was recognized as Best Actor in a Musical by SALT (Saratoga Area Local Theater) for his performance as Jean Valjean in the Merry-Go-Round production of "Les Miserables".

One final note to close out this mega-sized blog post - the "Rock of Ages" cast album was recorded yesterday! A release date is tentatively set for late May.

I was running onstage for a “protestor” scene and I almost did an old-school banana-peel-slip-fall....but I saved it. In response I made the "Safe" motion that umps do in baseball. Everyone laughed and I felt invincible for a couple of seconds! :-)

Songs to Mock and to Love

IF the jukebox musical and the 1980s rock ballad are not direct siblings, they must surely share a common ancestor. Both tend to be bombastic and demand un-self-consciousness from their performers; both attract fans who mask their sincere affection behind a layer of irony. Both are easy punching bags for critics in their respective genres, and nobody is going to argue that Broadway needs more of them.

Theater Review | 'Rock of Ages': Never Mind the Mullet; It’s the Tunes(October 27, 2008)

So that’s a lot of people who might be appalled by the idea of “Rock of Ages,” an unrepentant jukebox musical that opens on Tuesday at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. With a libretto assembled from more than two dozen lighter-waving rock anthems of the Reagan era, from Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” to Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian,” the production arrives on Broadway with a lot of baggage, but also a charmed history. The show has already made it farther than anyone — including its creators — expected. And if “Rock of Ages” goes further still, it will be because of the artists whose relentlessly infectious songs would seem to be the biggest strike against it.

“My one luxury,” said its book writer, Chris D’Arienzo, “is that nobody has a real preciousness about Warrant or Styx.”

Like the people in his script Mr. D’Arienzo, 36, was one more transplant to Los Angeles who went to that city in search of stardom — in his case, from the small farming town of Paw Paw, Mich., where his first car was a diesel truck, and his neighbors included Jerry Mitchell, the future Tony Award-winning choreographer.

Growing up in the 1980s Mr. D’Arienzo was more a fan of punk rock and New Romantic bands than hair metal acts. “I actually tried to avoid that stuff,” he said, “because it was the music of the people that wanted to throw me into a locker.” But, as in most show business tales, Hollywood got him to change his mind.

In 2004 Mr. D’Arienzo was recruited by the producers Matthew Weaver and Carl Levin, who had successfully sold Universal Pictures an idea for a rock musical set in the 1980s, only to see the concept languish in development.

On a fateful drive Mr. Weaver and Mr. Levin happened to hear the 1981 power ballad “Don’t Stop Believing” by the band Journey and concluded that it would be just as potent on a stage as on their car radio. They rapidly put together a CD of like-minded rock songs and passed it to the director Kristin Hanggi to see if there was a show in there somewhere.

Ms. Hanggi, who was finishing the Off Broadway run of the pop musical “Bare,” agreed that there was. “The songs were organically telling their own stories, about culturally what rock ’n’ roll means to us and having permission to break free,” she said. “We knew that it would be self-aware, winking at the audience and including the audience inside the joke.”

Mr. D’Arienzo was persuaded too. “When I really looked back on the most important, nostalgic parts of my adolescence, they were defined by these songs that happened to be playing at the dance or in the car.”

In meetings at various Sunset Strip institutions, from rock clubs to coffee bars, Ms. Hanggi and Mr. D’Arienzo sketched out the show, about an ensemble of characters at a fictitious West Hollywood club called the Bourbon Room. There would be an aspiring rock guitarist and an aspiring actress who fall in love, a seduction scene set to Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” and a dance number to the tune of REO Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” inspired by the dream ballet in “Oklahoma!”

In 2005 a nascent version of “Rock of Ages” was performed at King King, a club on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, followed in 2006 by runs at Vanguard, a nearby club, and on a soundstage at Ren-Mar Studios in Hollywood. Its cast members variously included Laura Bell Bundy (of Broadway’s “Hairspray” and “Legally Blonde”), James Snyder (Broadway’s “Cry-Baby”) and the pop singer Katharine McPhee.

Reviews were occasionally brutal — Backstage called it “possibly the worst theatrical production in the last several years” — but receipts were promising enough that in May 2006 its producers transferred it to Las Vegas for a weeklong run at the Flamingo.

That proved to be a mistake: “It was like performing for the cast of ‘Cocoon,’ ” Mr. Weaver said. Undeterred, the show moved to New York , where, with a cast anchored by the “American Idol” contestant Constantine Maroulis, it played Off Broadway from October through early January at New World Stages.

As usual, reviews varied. But the 499-seat theater was often sold out, attracting what producers said were ticket buyers seeking a boisterous concert experience rather than a genteel evening at the theater.

When movie rights were sold in December to New Line Cinema (the studio that produced the film adaptation of the “Hairspray” musical), a Broadway transfer for “Rock of Ages” became inevitable. Even in a barren economic environment the producers said they have encountered little difficulty capitalizing their Broadway production, whose initial budget they placed at $7 million.

This fund-raising success, they said, was due partly to the show’s subject matter, which attracted nontraditional investors. But they also acknowledged that their inexperience on Broadway made them oblivious to warning signs that might have discouraged more seasoned producers.

“We literally have horse blinders on,” said Scott Prisand, who is Mr. Weaver’s partner in the production company Corner Store Entertainment. “In our little world everything is awesome.”

As opening night approaches for the Broadway transfer, which stars Mr. Maroulis, Amy Spanger (“Kiss Me, Kate”) and James Carpinello (Broadway’s “Saturday Night Fever”), the producers have done all they can to play up its populist appeal: they have capped ticket prices at $99 and hired servers to provide drinks during the show.

Still, the creators understand that it will take much more than $10 cocktails to win over those theatergoers who are ready to consign the show to the dustbin of jukebox musical history, alongside “All Shook Up,” “Good Vibrations” and many others.

“I totally walk around town with my tail between my legs,” Mr. D’Arienzo said. “I totally get that people would, at first, find this to be a repellant notion. But that’s what I loved about the show.”

On the one hand, he acknowledged, a show whose first act concludes with its entire cast singing Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” would seem to have different ambitions from, say, “West Side Story.”

Then again, he said: “If I write something so ridiculous, maybe they’ll never make another jukebox musical again. Maybe that’s good too.”

Entire Cast of ROA Quit and Join "Hair"

Broadway is baffled this morning by the news of the defection of the entire cast of the new smash hit musical Rock Of Ages to the revival of Hair.

ROA co-star Mitch Jarvis said "Well we just missed Will and Nova too much" referring to former ROA cast members Will Swenson and Nova Bergeron now playing in the cast of Hair. "And besides, I get to wear a wig" said Wesley Taylor.

Producer Matt Weaver was stunned. "When they said they wanted to go to Will and Nova, I thought they said Villanova [University], to do a show there for the students or something.

Producers are still begging the cast to reconsider, but in the meantime they have been temporarily replaced by the recently out of work company of Spring Awakening The Musical.

We've just gotten word on an amazing new documentary premiering this week on VH1 Classic and thought our "Rock of Ages"-minded folks would enjoy...here's the scoop:

The 1980s were a decade of unprecedented decadence. Wall Street was booming, cocaine was the chic drug of choice, and L.A.'s notorious glam metal scene was in full swing on the Sunset Strip. Ruling that scene were the heavy hitting hair bands and the women who loved them.

Just got this scoop in from "Rock of Ages" HQ in Joey Primo's new tour bus...

Constantine Maroulis will be on FOX BUSINESS CHANNEL’s "Strategy Room" TODAY, Friday, March 27th from 5 – 6PM. It is a live, national program and will be hosted by Robert Galinsky (owner of REALITY TV SCHOOL) and the show will be about reality TV. Constantine will also be able to talk about "Rock of Ages".

Also, "Rock of Ages"will be featured in WABC-TV’s (CHANNEL 7 in NYC) Spring Theatre Preview, hosted by David Hyde Pierce, on Saturday, March 28th at 7:30PM. It is also being heavily promoted on TV and in taxis (great news for all of you coming to NY to visit and catch a performance of ROA)!!!!

Hey, Rockers!

On the eve of previews kicking off, the folks at "Rock of Ages" HQ in the Sunset Strip 7-11 (home of those wonderful cherry Slurpees!) have announced some special packages / seating offers, as well as made an effort to clear up some of the speculation about drink service and the day-of-performance ticket lottery system.

Here we go...

VIP GREEN ROOM BOX ($295.00 for 4 tickets): Party the night away in the best 'see & be seen' seats in the house. This ultimate party package includes four cushy seats to the show located in one of only four mezzanine boxes, and includes your own waiter.
PREMIUM SEATS (Ticket Range $135.00 - 175.00) A premium ticket at ROCK OF AGES actually gets you something more than nifty aisle seats; you also get waitress service and access to the VIP Mezzanine Lounge starting one-hour before curtain.
DRINK SERVICE (For all orchestra ticket holders) Come one, come all. Starting 30 minutes before every show and during intermission, audience members seated in the orchestra will be able to buy color-coded drink chips (to eliminate money exchange/ credit card transactions during the show) from one of the several waiters disbursed throughout the orchestra or at the bar. The chips can then be redeemed during the show, from your seat, for the drink of your choice. While the show is playing (and if you have not purchased any drink chips or are seated in the mezzanine), drinks may be purchased at the bar and can then be taken back to your seat.
LOTTERY TICKETS Two hours prior to every performance, there will be a lottery drawing offering $26.50 tickets for selected seats in the orchestra. Entries accepted at box office beginning two and half hours prior to each performance. Names will be drawn at random two hours prior to curtain time. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing. Limit one entry per person, and two tickets per winner. Cash only.
All tickets (including VIP Green Room and Premium Seats) can be purchased via Ticketmaster.com / 212-307-4100 or in person at The Brooks Atkinson Box Office, 256 W. 47th Street.

I've just received word of a FANTASTIC new contest for "Rock of Ages" fans!

Here are the details, direct from "Rock of Ages" headquarters in the powder room of the Venus Club:

Hey Rock Fans!

Have you seen ROA and loved it? Have you seen it 20 times and loved it?
Here’s your chance to help pick a super rad slogan for the show!

Write a short and sweet statement that describes the awesomeness of ROA and post it on the Official Rock of Ages Facebook Fan Page Wall. We’ll select the top five and let you guys vote on the best one.

The winner gets a free pair of tix to the show AND their slogan will be used in an ad!

You have until Friday, March 13 at Noon (EST) to post your slogan on the Offical ROA Facebook Fan Page Wall.

Finalists will be announced on Tuesday March 17!

I stopped by the Brooks Atkinson after work today and things are definitely getting into gear at "Rock of Ages". I decided to take a few photos of the updated artwork outside the theater...

"Rock of Ages" Stars to Perform at "Purim Shpiel" Benefit March 9th

3/9/09 UPDATE FROM "Rock of Ages" HQ: Due to conflicts with the tech rehearsal for Rock of Ages, Constantine and Amy will NOT be performing at the Purim Shpiel event this evening. :-(

Here's yet another appearance by our fearless "Rock of Ages" leading man and lady…

"Rock of Ages" stars Constantine Maroulis and Amy Spanger will be performing on Monday, March 9th the "5th Annual Broadway Purim Shpiel", a comedic retelling of the Purim story at New York's Hudson Theater to benefit Taglit-Birthright Israel, an organization dedicated to sending young Jews from across the world to Israel.

The show, hosted by Jackie Hoffman (Xanadu/Hairspray), will also include such Broadway stars as Jordan Gelber (All My Sons), Mary Faber (Avenue Q), Marc Kudisch (9 to 5), Logan Lipton and Alli Mauzey (Wicked), Jared Gertner and Stanley Bahorek (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Noah Weisberg (South Pacific), and Carly Jibson (Hairspray).

A complimentary cocktail hour begins at 7pm, followed by the show at 8pm. Tickets range from $55-100 and are available through the event web site.
